Pop Teens Sparkle on Stage
Could they be any more cute and funny?
The Japanese pop group NMB48, made up of high school girls, came on stage for an after-screening speech about their first movie “Geinin! The Movie.”
“Geinin! The Movie” was nominated as a competition film of the Laugh category. It’s the first movie NMB48 has starred in and screened in Theater 1 at the Okinawa Convention Center.
Even though the Japanese market is saturated with idol groups like NMB48 these Osaka girls are different due to their outstanding sense of humor.
In the movie, they portray high school kids who belong a very unique after school “owarai (comedy) club” in a classy girl’s prep school that is the dream of every girl in the Kansai region (around Osaka) of Japan. They struggle to win a “National Female High School Students Comedy Championship”, commonly called “JK-1.” This teen movie is based on Nippon Television’s comedy program “Geinin!” that NMB48 star in.
After the screening, the Director Hidemi Uchida and NMB48 (Sayaka Yamamoto, Miyuki Watanabe, Nana Yamada, Mayu Ogasawara, Riho Kotani) came on stage. The audience was driven to a wild frenzy, calling out the girls’ names in a scene reminiscent of The Beatles.
Yamamoto said, “This is the 3rd time for me to visit OIMF but I’m so glad to walk on the red carpet as a cast member of a movie in the first time. This delightful movie has dialog in our own dialect from Osaka and the characters are based on our personalities.” Kotani noted, “I appreciate that some people stood in line from last night to get tickets.”
At the press conference after the screening, Rena Shimada, one of the NMB48 members, played interviewer and asked questions to other members.
Watanabe added, “I hope everybody loves this movie.”
You can fully enjoy the group’s cute and funny charms throughout the movie.
