Korean Mega-hit "Architecture 101" Charms Okinawa
-
Lee Yong-joo's "Architecture 101" was a surprise hit in 2012, charming over 4 million Koreans to the cinema to see its mixture of romance, drama and nostalgia for the 1990s.
The tear-jerking movie, set on Korea's southern island of Jeju, which bears some resemblance to the Okinawa islands, has been responsible for a "first-love boom" in Korea. It was screened in competition at Theater 1, where a largely female content of fans filled the auditorium.
"This film everyone can relate to, as we all go through many changes and feel nostalgia for analogue communication," said the director, who admitted that work on the script had begun 10 years earlier.
Producer Kim Kyun-hee joined director Lee Yong-joo on stage, Kim commenting, "Okinawa is a place that I thought I may see on television and magazines, and always wanted to go someday!"
Yong-joo was delighted to see the big screen on the beach and was impressed by the festival setting, as he told Okinawa International Movie Festival in a private interview after the screening.
"The temperature is really similar to Jeju-island, so I can enjoy the breeze and it feels really nice to be here. I often come to Japan, but it's my first time to Okinawa, and like all of Japan, the style is really nice."
Architecture 101 opens across Japan in May.
