Human comedy "Berlin Kaplani" Brings Real Fight to the OIMF Competition

Turkish director Hakan Algül appeared on stage to present his latest work, "Berlin Kaplani" on the final day of competition. The tale of a boxer down on his luck in Berlin, the movie is a human comedy, a form the director has pursued through TV and films throughout his career.
Greeting the crowd with "Konnichwa Okinawa", Algül went on to say that "Because there are not many festivals for comedy movies, I'm glad to participate, and I think I can really enjoy it."
It is the first time for Algül to ever attend a movie festival, though his films are watched by millions in his native Turkey. He told OIMF's web team that film festival rarely choose popular films, but he wants to reach as many people as possible through his movies so does not mind not attending them.
Algül spoke of his love for the Okinawan cuisine of goya and takoyaki on stage too. "Japan and Turkey are similar, it is easy to spend time in Okinawa because of the feeling and atmosphere is one of warmth." He also joked that as actor Ata Demirer played a large boxer, perhaps next time " he can fatten even more and I can shoot the story of a sumo wrestler!"
Discussing the differences in styles of humour from country to country, the director said, "in Japanese comedy everything is big, exaggerated, it's a kind of overacting and not so real. It’s like Japanese theater actually. But I like human stories."
Though it is his first time to Japan, Algül expressed his desire to see as much of the country as possible. "I will go Tokyo and Kyoto. Here is a tropical island, but I am also interested in going to Kyoto especially to see Buddhist and Shintoist religious sites. I will go for my traveling!"
